Camo Prints

While Tumblr surfing, I came across these photos of Rihanna in various camouflage-print looks. And I got to thinking about how at this point in time, the big-printed, slouchy-but-not-quite-baggy style of the nineties now qualifies as vintage. For my generation, whose childhood caught the mid-to-late nineties, our first hints of style came from shows like Zoom, with the young cast’s big prints and bold colors; Full House, where we saw baggy oxford shirts and thin vests; and Fresh Prince of Bel Air, where 80’s-style boxy blazers and almost-psychedelic sweaters held their ground across the decades. I remember the first camo-print shirt I got from Limited Too at age seven, and they were still a hit by 2004, when the unforgettable Mean Girls featured one dorky girl gushing about a queen bee, “I saw [ her] wearing army pants and flip -flops, so I bought army pants and flip-flops.” Though I can’t say the same for flip-flops, the camo print is going strong in its third decade of trend life, with no  complaints from me, Rihanna, or any of us here at Messes Of Dresses.
