Like we said last week, we at the Messes of Dresses Blog love all things retro — retro-style dresses, retro accessories, retro hair and makeup styles — and today we're going to take a look at some retro beauty advice. Listen carefully, ladies — who knows what you might learn?
I myself have a pretty round face, and, archaic though it may seem, Miss Ratherly Stern's advice is right on the money. Take a look in the mirror — were you able to learn anything from her as well?
Well, what do you think? I personally find it interesting that even as the frocks that were once the mainstream are now considered retro-style dresses, all the basics of beauty advice still hold true. Lots of rest, exercise a proper hygiene routine and a good diet all contribute to looking your best — the difference now is that we've come so far in the world of cosmetics that we can look like we've gotten 8 hours of sleep when really we were up all night partyi — er, studying.
Eventually, though, all that studying catches up with us. It's best to just stay healthy and well-rested — make-up can make you look great, but it'll make you look even greater if you've got a nice, solid, healthy base to work with.

So naturally a Vintage Valentine's Day is right up our alley — and here are some ideas for those of you who feel the same way!
1. Give a Vintage Valentine. Vintage Valentine Cards are the best — they're always adorable and classy. The only problem is, where do you find one? By definition, vintage Valentine cards are no longer manufactured new.
Solution! Find an image of one online, then print it out on some nice paper to make your own. (Check out a couple faves below.) Or, if you're artistically-inclined, draw one up!
2. Dress up like a pin-up girl! Put on your cutest vintage-style dress and do your hair and make-up like a 1950s vixen! For inspiration and tutorials, check out Ashley from the Hollywood Hair and Makeup Blog Pin-Up Tutorials Section — she's got the look down! And with her tutorials on how to style pin curls and how to look like Dita Von Teese (to name a few), you will too!
3. Get a burger and float at a retro diner. It might not be fancy, but it will make you feel like you're about to go to a sock hop. Don't forget — that's one float, two straws ;)

Do something fun with you friends. Whether it's taking each other out for a night on the town or staying in for a movie marathon (go for some horror movies, romantic comedies probs aren't the best route to go if you want to cheer yourself up on V-Day), you can have a great time with your girls.
Indulge in a little retail therapy. Whoever said shopping is a poor substitute for love clearly didn't know the power of a great outfit. Flowers and chocolates will die and be eaten — but a cute retro style dress is forever. Check out Messes of Dresses' selection of trendy dresses — if you enter Lover15 at checkout you'll get 15% off your order and a pair of heart-shaped glasses.
Volunteer. Spend the day in the children's wing at a hospital, or at a senior citizens' center — bringing some joy to others on a holiday like Valentine's Day is a surefire way to feel great!
