The Retro Style Dresses of Elaine from Seinfeld

Fashion finds inspiration in some unlikely places, and right now, it’s harking back to the retro style dresses worn by Elaine from Seinfeld in the 1990s. Elaine was fond of wearing flowery floor-length dresses, heavy leather shoes and socks, and jackets with large shoulder pads. It may have been a bit daggy looking at the time, but now it’s cool.

As a recent New York Times article pointed out, this Fall is all about the Elaine look. It’s a little shorter and flirtier, but it’s Elaine nonetheless. Get yourself a girly mid-calf length floral dress and team it with some sturdy brown lace-up boots or leather dance shoes, and throw your hair up into a messy secretary bun, and you’re all set. It’s a modern prudish and bookish look that’s feminine and flattering.

So, why the trend towards long 90s retro style dresses? There’s a sense of female empowerment in dressing comfortably in loose clothing and wearing shoes that you can easily walk and also run in. Many women have "been there and done that" when it comes to 3-inch heels, fishnets, mini skirts and tank tops, and now want mod clothing that’s both feminine and tough.

  1. OMG! Me too! I thought I was the only one out there!
I've been raiding all the thrift stores before people catch on! (Wearing one now) My favorite is the big sunflower print ones. My mom still has a ton of her boho skirts too that I stole.

  2. Jean material always makes great vintage fashion. Flower pattern with jean jacket is never failed I think.
